#1- Our babies and little ones need to experience a wide range of love! Love is the biggest mark of a Christian (According to John 17, and a TON of other verses). Love is what makes a job into a ministry at church. If you can do what you do without loving the task or the people, it is just a job that doesn’t pay. These precious little souls need your love. It is a great time to show them what love looks like and sounds like. These little ones grow up from the earliest of age knowing that Christians love, because God is love.
#2- Serving in the nursery shares God’s love with the parents. Since I have become a parent, I deeply appreciate the fact that my brothers and sisters have a desire to be in the nursery with my children. Imagine the feeling of parents when they find out that a very low percentage of church membership will volunteer to serve in the nursery. Parents really feel love in the local church when they know people love and care about their kids. When they know that a large percentage of the church serves the small children, they understand a little better what love is.
#3-We get to be a part of the solution. As a church member, how many times have you heard the statement “our children are the future of this church”? I’m gambling you’ve heard it more than a dozen times. Why? Because it is emphatically true. You get to be a part of ensuring that next generation continues the work and legacy of your church. You get to play a huge part in shaping their view of Christ and the Kingdom. Now, some of you are thinking that isn’t you, because you somehow feel inadequate to teach. Good news! You don't have to be a good teacher, because anyone can put a small child on their lap, or pat them on the head and say “God loves you very much”. See how insanely easy that is? Come on, you can do it!
#4- No prior experience needed!!! I think one of the greatest reservations and objections I have heard from really good people is that they don’t know how to deal with kids. Can I let you in on a secret? The crazy people at the hospital let me come home with a 2 day old infant and I have no prior experience! That’s insane, right? In fact, they did that 3 times and we didn’t break any of those fragile little humans! Ok, seriously, you can do it. You can get paired up with someone who will show you the very simple ropes and pretty soon your confidence will be soaring.
